The New Age of Adventure: Ten Years of Great Writing

August 31st, 2010 by EM Guide | Comments Off | Filed in Travel

Product Description
National Geographic Adventure has published the best work by today?s finest writers, and this tenth anniversary anthology assembles an elite corps of authors that includes Sebastian Junger, Peter Matthiessen, Philip Caputo, and two dozen others. These reporters have voyaged to the ends of the earth to bring back the decade?s most thrilling, eccentric, and extraordinary tales. But the pieces collected here do more than paint a portrait of the world?s most extreme and fascinating environments??they also explore important questions about adventure in the 21st century.

These stories rocket readers across the roof of the world on the new high-speed railway in Tibet, describe the tension between Indian farmers and the sacred elephants besieging their villages, and introduce them to a shaman whom some believe can cure the most serious depressions. We meet the great Afghan warlord Ahmed Shah Massoud??said to have been the finest guerrilla fighter since Ho Chi Minh??encounter a yeti with legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner, and much more.

This is a wide-ranging collection for every road warrior and adventurer??armchair or otherwise??culled from the much acclaimed journal that in its first ten years has won millions of devoted readers and garnered more than a dozen prestigious prizes for excellence in journalism.

The Art of Rough Travel: From the Peculiar to Practical, Advice From a 19th Century Explorer

August 31st, 2010 by EM Guide | Comments Off | Filed in Travel

Product Description
The first abridged (and thus digestible) edition of a classic 19th Century manual for the backcountry traveler?its advice is both deliciously bizarre and surprisingly relevant for 21st century adventurers. ? A novelty item at 124 pages?one-third the length of current editions available only in unabridged facsimile reproductions ? An interesting historical document that offers an early glimpse into the culture of outdoor recreation ? Guaranteed to both entertain and instruct “Carrion is not noxious to starving men. ” This is one of the countless potentially useful bits of information contained within Sir Francis Galton?s fascinating but unwieldy (366 pages) The Art of Travel. First published in 1855, the book became a bible of self-sufficiency for a host of now famous explorers including Sir Richard Burton. Galton?s work is now available in a condensed edition that highlights the amusing and the practical while losing extraneous material and minutia such as how many fleabites he endured on one trip and how many bush ticks bit him on another.

The Art of Travel recounts Galton?s adventures as one of the first Europeans to explore the interior of southwestern Africa. His quaint advice on interacting with “savages,” handling elephants, and stopping asses from braying will make you laugh. But you?ll want to take notes on his instructions on how to find water in the desert, navigate by the stars, or follow tracks in the dark.

Florida Vacation Cruise

August 30th, 2010 by EM Guide | Comments Off | Filed in Cruise Vacation

Product Description
The happy Haw-ville Eight got up early on the second day of their Class of ’65 high school graduation celebration trip. In violation of rules their parents had given them, they had paired up as couples and slept together in their four motel rooms anyway.
They went to have breakfast at The Dingy — a mom and pop place, before going to the marina, where their 28-foot rented cabin cruiser was waiting for them like a faithful dog. By 7:30 am they were heading out the boating channel to the fishing grounds for a day of clean honest fun on the Gulf of Mexico.
By mid-afternoon they had caught a super-sized ice chest full of trout, red-fish and big groupers. They were happy with that, but not so pleased when their sunburns started to sting and they got rained on later in the day.
They stayed a second night as pairs of lovers at the Seashell Motel, to everyone’s satisfaction. The next morning they headed back home to Haw-ville with an adventure story that they were very anxious to share with their parents and friends.
